Youth Outreach & SHPE Jr.

Interested in introducing Detroit youth to STEM? We work with local high schools to organize Noche de Ciencias events and to mentors FIRST Robotics teams. Take a look at the SHPE Jr. Newsletter - it will provide great insight about our work.

Latinas in STEM

SHPE Detroit Chapter History

 

  • SHPE-Detroit was founded in 1995.

  • Started with YES (Young Engineer and Scientists) group comprised of a variety of Detroit Industry professionals (GM, Ford, Chrysler)

  • Mission: “To Inspire, Mentor and Motivate High School Students to Pursue Four-Year College Degrees in Engineering and Science.”

  • YES and Jr. YES Program:

- Middle School, 9th and 10th Graders

- Sessions in Chemistry, Physics, Web Design, Math, etc.

- Design Project: Cinco de Mayo float design (engineering theme)

- Compete in FIRST Lego Robotics Competition

  • University Relations

  • Fundraising and Community support

  • Corporate Social and Student Intern program support

  • Mentoring Programs

  • SHPE-Detroit Professional Chapter disbanded in 2009

  • SHPE-Detroit Professional Chapter reformed in 2012 with a mission of "Changing lives in Detroit by inspiring and motivating young Hispanic students to achieve educational excellence in STEM fields through mentoring and community presence; as well as to enhance career opportunities for Hispanics by providing a strong professional network."
